GCDA’s road beautification plan hits a roadblock

KOCHI: Even as Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) envisages beautification of the northern side of the Marine Drive walkway, the authorities have failed to pull down the encroachments and illegal shops on the sides of the road leading to the High Court Jetty.
GCDA had decided to rehabilitate around 53 shop owners and is learned to have already discussed the move with the shop owners. However, the illegal shops that have encroached the path are posing a problem. Also, the path has become dirty for people to use it to reach the Marine Drive walkway.
GCDA has been mute a spectator to the encroachments in the area. When contacted, GCDA chairman N Venugopal said that the authority is looking into the matter. Also, it has been understood that the illegal shop owners are adamant on not vacating the place.
