Kayamkulam: Rape, murder accused gets death sentence


Thursday, May 31, 2012: Viswarajan, an accused in a case relating to the rape and murder of a woman in Kayamkulam on October 2011, was awarded death sentence by the Alappuzha district additional sessions Court here on Thursday. The Court also slapped him with a fine of Rs one lakh.
The victim identified as Smitha (35), was working as a sales girl in a shop in Kayamkulam. Police said the accused had attacked Smitha on seeing her walking home alone at night. He dragged the woman to a marshy field nearby and raped her.
He fled the scene soon after, leaving her with her head half-buried in the marsh. After hearing her cries for held the local residents rushed her to hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival. Viswarajan, a daily wage construction labourer, is an accused in several cases of attacks on women, the police said.
