Man found guilty of rape, murder of woman in Mavelikkara


Wednesday, May 30, 2012: Viswarajan, an accused in a case relating to the rape and murder of a woman in Mavelikkara on October 2011, was pronounced guilty by the Mavelikkara additional sessions Court here on Wednesday.
The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow. The victim identified as Smitha, was working as a sales girl in a shop in Kayamkulam. Police said the accused had attacked Smitha on seeing her walking home alone at night. He dragged the woman to a marshy field nearby and raped her.
He fled the scene soon after, leaving her with her head half-buried in the marsh. After hearing her cries for held the local residents rushed her to hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival. Viswarajan, a daily wage construction labourer, is an accused in several cases of attacks on women, the police said.
