Muslim League’s panchayat member hacked at Chelakkara


THRISSUR: Member of Chelakkara Grama Panchayat who left CPI (M) and joined Muslim League was on Thursday attacked. Rafeeq (38) of Meppadam Payattipparambil was injured after he was hacked by assailants at his friend Suresh’s house on 9.30 in the morning.


Rafeeq’s hands and legs were broken and his head was hacked. Suresh and another friend Bilal (19) were also injured in the attack. All of them have been admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur.


The assailants arrived in two autorickshaws and a motorbike, and attacked them unexpectedly. The assailants fled the spot soon after the women at the house cried out. Following the incident, Chelakkara Circle Inspector of Police Hamsa took two CPI (M) workers into custody.


Rafeeq was a member of the panchayat during the last LDF regime. Later, due to some difference of opinions with the party he left CPI (M) and joined Muslim League. Subsequently, he contested election as a Muslim League candidate and won the 14th ward.


Protesting the attack, the UDF observed a hartal at Chelakkara.
