Night patrolling cops to get advanced gadgets

KOCHI: Thieves beware, the police are soon going to get advance gadgets to catch night-time marauders. The police night patrolling teams will be equipped with night vision devices and thermal cameras for the first time.
With the increasing number of crimes during night, it is very hard to trace the culprits. “The night vision glasses are very important for the police force. The night vision glasses will make the police trace the culprits easily. The night vision glasses will also help in search and rescue activities,” sources in the Police Headquarters said.
In the first phase, the police department will install 15 night vision devices in selected police stations. “ We have ordered for 15 night vision devices in the first phase.
After testing, we will install more night vision devices. The tender for the devices has been called and the devices will be supplied by September or October this year,” sources said. The police will also get thermal cameras. “We have given order for five to ten thermal cameras. The hand-held camera allows us to detect the body heat of hiding criminals.
We also hope to use the camera for searching missing people and to identify premises that are involved in drug offences.
This kind of advanced technology is absent in other parts of the country. We will be the first to use it in the country,” sources added.
