Nursing student's suicide: Bank Manager held

KOTTAYAM: The police have arrested the manager of the HDFC Bank, Sasthri Road branch, here in connection with the suicide of Sruthi, a nursing student, who was denied an education loan. Kodungoor Thoppil Jobin, 33, is the second accused in the case. He is charged under IPC 306 for abetting suicide.
The loan application of Sruthi, received by the Pulinchuvad branch of HDFC was later forwarded to Sasthri Road branch. Jobin was arrested as he had signed on the loan denial intimation that was sent to Sruthi’s house. Meanwhile, the police could not find the prime accused, HDFC Pulichuvadu branch manager G S Harikrishnan, who reportedly fled to Chennai soon after the incident.
“Harikrishnan had filed an anticipatory bail in the High Court. The court had accepted his bail plea. So we cannot take him into
custody for the time being,” Kottayam West CI A J Thomas said.
However, the police after examining documents at the bank, found that the reasons cited for denying the loan to Sruthi were not valid. One of the reasons was that Sruthi had passed her higher secondary exams in a second chance. Another reason was that Sruthi’s parents had defaulted a loan earlier.
